December 7th - Remembering the Attack on Pearl Harbor

Dear Robert,

Everyone here at VetFriends.com has taken a moment to reflect and express our deepest respect and gratitude to the Courage, Bravery and Patriotism of all of our WWII Veterans, both living and deceased, along with all of our U.S. Veterans & Military. We salute you.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Pearl Harbor Remembrance It is important for all of us to take a moment and remember the December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor - a defining moment in history.

The Pearl Harbor "surprise" helped shape a generation of National defense policy and was not forgotten by those who had lived through the war.

Monuments were erected on the battle sites and around the country Veteran reunion groups met regularly to keep the memory alive.

Please visit the VetFriends.com WWII/Pearl Harbor remembrance photo page at www.vetfriends.com/militarypics - dedicated to all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Pearl Harbor attacks, WWII and moreover throughout history.

Brief History - "Day that shall live in Infamy"

  • Under the greatest secrecy, Japanese Vice Admiral Nagumo took his ships to sea on the 26th of November 1941, as a result of Japan's pressing need for secure flanks during their planned offensive into Southeast Asia and the East Indies.

  • Before dawn on the 7th of December, a carefully planned attack wave of over 180 aircraft, including torpedo planes, high-level bombers, dive bombers and fighters, was launched in the darkness and flew off to the south. When the first group had taken off, a second attack wave of similar size, but with more dive bombers and no torpedo planes, was brought up from the carriers' hangar decks and sent off into the emerging morning light.

  • Dive bombers attacked airfields at about 7:55 AM, destroying many aircraft. This attack prompted the dispatch of the famous message "Air raid, Pearl Harbor -- this is no drill", the outside World's first indication that war had come to the Pacific.

  • Within a few moments, torpedo planes attacked from east and west, with one of the latter torpedoing the USS Helena at 1010 dock. Others, from the same direction, hit USS Utah and USS Raleigh, off the western side of Ford Island.

  • Within a short time five of eight battleships at Pearl Harbor were sunk or sinking, with the rest damaged. Several other ships and most Hawaii-based combat planes were also knocked out and over 2400 Americans were dead.

  • The United States Navy's battleship force was removed as a possible threat to the Japanese Empire's southward expansion. As a result, America was abruptly brought into the Second World War as a full combatant.

The memory of the "sneak attack" on Pearl Harbor fueled a determination for Americans to fight on against all opposed to World peace.

VA Secretary to Announce VA-Bob Woodruff Foundation Partnership
Aim of Partnership is to Better Connect Veterans with Resources Close to Home
WASHINGTON – Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Secretary Robert A. McDonald this evening will announce a partnership with the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) to further advance VA's outreach to Veterans through deeper and more innovative local and community partnerships. VA will capitalize on BWF's strength and contacts to find unique ways to connect Veterans, transitioning Servicemembers and their families with resources right where they live. The partnership with BWF is one of many strategic alliances VA is forming and is an integral goal of the MyVA initiative, the largest reorganization in VA's history which reorients VA around the needs of Veterans.
"We believe that by working together we can create a 'single front door,' or a convenient community point of entry, to help Veterans gain access to the benefits they have earned in addition to the resources unique to their local communities," said Secretary McDonald. "This partnership creates a more robust integration of federal, state and local governments, non-profit organizations, businesses and other local partners at the community level. By combining and sharing our efforts and expertise, I believe this partnership can help us better serve our nation's Veterans – together."
"Our nation's transitioning Servicemembers, Veterans and their families each have unique needs, making the resources and services dedicated to overcoming their challenges all the more necessary," said BWF Executive Director Anne Marie Dougherty. "We are excited by this opportunity to work in partnership with VA to reach Veterans and their families where they live and to deliver high-impact programs to support sustainable success."
The Bob Woodruff Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring injured Servicemembers, Veterans and their families are thriving. Since 2006, BWF has invested nearly $30 million in programs reaching more than 2 million injured Servicemembers, Veterans and their families in three key areas: Education and Employment, Rehabilitation and Recovery, and Quality of Life.
For more information about the Foundation, visit www.bobwoodrufffoundation.org. For more information about VA including the MyVA initiative, visit www.va.gov.
