Read complete story here VA Press Release VA Partners With Walgreens to Expand Pilot Immunization Program Nationwide On October 2, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it will join forces with retailer Walgreens to provide greater access to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-recommended vaccinations to veterans across the country. This partnership grew out of a successful pilot program that began in Florida to provide flu vaccines to veterans throughout the state. Based on those results, VA is expanding the pilot nationwide. According to a September 30 Nextgov article by Bob Brewin, the Department of Veterans Affairs plans to field a new, commercial patient scheduling system by 2017, not 2020, as it had previously said in contract documents released Sept. 1. Read complete story here As Reported by Huffington Post VA Announces New Grant Monies to Fight Homelessness According to an October 1 Huffington Post story by Robbie Couch, the VA announced on September 30 that $207 million will be allocated in grants to help fight veteran homelessness across America. Read complete story here As Reported in the Army Times Military Hospitals Show Broad Disparities in Patient Care According to an October 1 story in the Army Times by Patricia Kime, a comprehensive review of the military healthcare system finds that, overall, the military health system is functioning on a par with private-sector care, but patients face broad disparities in appointment wait times and quality of care—and have little way of finding out how their Defense Department hospital or clinic measures up regarding safety or potential harm to their health. Leonard Wood According to a September 30 Army Times article by Deidre Shesgreen, Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has asked the Pentagon to investigate allegations that Army leaders at Fort Leonard Wood discouraged trainees from reporting sexual assaults. Read complete story here As Reported by The Washington Post General Accused of MST Retired Quietly According to an Oct 1 Washington Post story by Dan Lamothe, a two-star Army general, fired from his job in Djibouti last year after allegedly groping a female adviser, was allowed to retire quietly with a demotion in rank at the same time that a sexual-assault case against another Army general received international attention, according to Army officials and military documents.
